Police Officer, Part-time
Campus Police

Provides safety and security services to students, staff, faculty, and visitors through efficient use of departmental resources. Position is classified as essential personnel under college policy and is subject to college and department policies regarding essential personnel.  Performs essential duties related to police/security work as identified by management during inclement weather, emergency situations, or as campus needs dictate. This position is part-time, less than 20 hours per week. Hours may vary.

- Responds to all calls for service and request for assistance from Meredith College student, staff, faculty and visitors.
- Determines necessary and appropriate actions needed to resolve problems and answers calls for service. May need to resort to applying minimum levels of force at times.
- Patrols campus by vehicle or foot.  Operate a law enforcement patrol vehicle during both the day and night. Controls access to campus and the Greenway during closing hours.
- Responds to any call, fire or intrusion alarms, including suspicious person(s) and take appropriate action.
- Provides traffic direction for large and small events.
- May make campus bank deposits
- Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exist to search and arrest.
- Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and area outdoors, which may involve feeling and detecting objects.
- Gathers information in investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witness, suspects, and confidential informants.
- Checks doors and window of building to ensure they are secure. Turns on and turn off interior and exterior light according to set schedules or special request.
- Duties may include inclement weather safety responsibilities as necessary due to inclement weather and activities related to emergency situations.

Skills Needed: 
- Ability to use discretion in handling difficult persons and analyze situations likely to be encountered on patrol.
- Observe and retain names, faces and details of occurrences; keep detailed notes for report writing and other daily log sheets, understand and correct emergency alarm systems.
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices; interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Ability to understand and work within the scope of authority; apply policies and procedures.

Key interfaces:
- Responds to calls by students, faculty, staff and visitors.
- May need to confront hostile or belligerent persons in an appropriate and professional manner.

Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Current NC Driver License and clear driving history.
- Certification as a law enforcement officer by the state of North Carolina within eight months of hire.

Working conditions & physical demands:
- Must be able to work any shift and respond/report for duty, as necessary. Part of duties may include general office setting with moderate noise level. Must be able to operate company vehicles.
- Patrols campus outdoors and may be exposed to the weather. May be held for additional shifts during inclement weather, if relief is not possible.
- Ability to navigate physical obstacles, such as walls, heights, etc. Ability to physically help students, faculty, and staff having health issues
- Must be able to walk for extended distances, stand for long periods, climb stairs, and run, as necessary.
- Must occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
